Minimum covering substrings
NeedleThyme supports project-based AI conversations about minimum covering substrings on Windows. Compare a proposed sliding window with repeated-character examples and review the code before applying it.
from collections import Counter
def covering_window(text, required):
if type(text) is not str or type(required) is not str or max(len(text), len(required)) > 1024:
raise ValueError("window.input")
if not required:
return ""
need, missing, left, best = Counter(required), len(required), 0, None
for right, char in enumerate(text, 1):
if need[char] > 0:
missing -= 1
need[char] -= 1
while missing == 0:
if best is None or right-left < best[1]-best[0]:
best = (left, right)
old = text[left]
need[old] += 1
if need[old] > 0:
missing += 1
left += 1
return "" if best is None else text[best[0]:best[1]]- Connection
- Base URL, credentials and a reachable server.
- Project
- Check empty requirements and absent matches, choosing the leftmost tie without Unicode normalization.
- Review before applying
- Compare actual behavior with the expected result. If a check fails, investigate it before applying more changes.

A text feature becomes easier to change when the desired result is stated precisely. NeedleThyme gives you a Windows AI coding workspace for developing those requirements alongside the project files. Describe the input, the content a returned fragment must contain and how the application uses it. Ask the connected assistant to inspect the current selection code before proposing a different rule.
The covering-window example offers one concrete task: find a short fragment containing the required characters, including repeated requirements. You could ask for review of how the caller distinguishes an absent result from a valid empty result, and how equal candidates are handled. Keep those decisions tied to the feature you are building. A compact implementation alone does not establish that the visible result has the intended meaning.
Connect an available uncensored AI model through a supported OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic endpoint, supplying credentials if required. Context limits, tools and restrictions depend on the selected model and server. Review the proposed edits and test representative fragments through the calling feature. A separately running local model server defines the inference connection, but it does not make all connected tools or services local.
Questions about the returned text fragment
How should repeated required characters be described?
State whether each occurrence must be represented or whether presence alone is enough. Supply a short example that distinguishes the two rules. The assistant can then review the existing code against the intended behavior rather than guessing from a feature name.
What if more than one shortest fragment qualifies?
Choose a tie rule if the application needs stable output, and inspect whether the implementation follows it. Include tied examples in project tests. A result can satisfy the length requirement while still changing unpredictably from a user's perspective.
Why distinguish no match from an empty requirement?
Those cases may imply different interface messages or follow-up actions. Specify the representation each caller expects and inspect how it is consumed. Avoid changing the helper's return convention without reviewing the feature that interprets the returned value.
Will NeedleThyme build a complete text-search interface?
You can use the workspace to develop the necessary project code, but the example establishes only one selection task. Describe additional interface behavior separately, review proposed files and verify the integrated feature in your own application environment.
